In August, I made a visit to the St Barbe Museum and Lymington Library to obtain copies of articles published about William Rufus and Arthur Lloyd:
Visit to St Barbe Museum, Lymington
In his article, Reflections on King William Rufus, local historian Nick Saunders mentions the unveiling of a memorial cairn on the Beaulieu estate.
This was reported in our local paper on 14 April 2001. The archivists at the St Barbe Museum kindly provided a copy of the newspaper article:
The headline was, "Arthur's research causes rumpus over Rufus." and the text may be read in the attached Appendix:
Visit to Lymington Library, Lymington
On page 29 of Arthur Lloyd's booklet, The Death of Rufus, Arthur states that he sent author Professor Barlow copies of two of Arthur's articles published in the Hampshire Magazine in 1962 and 1965.
I was able to obtain copies from the back numbers of the Magazine held by Lymington Library.
Hampshire Magazine, September 1962
The article was entitled, "Where did Rufus die?
by A.T. Lloyd
(who has started one of Hampshire's fiercest controvercies)"
I took images of the article:
but the text may be read in the attched Appendix:
Hampshire Magazine, March 1965
The article was entitled, "A new look at the New Forest" in which Arthur Lloyd reiterates that King William Rufus fell at Thorougham/Truham.
I took images of the article:
and typed it up as an Appendix:
This was a very successful visit and the staff at the Museum and Library were very helpful.
These articles and his booklet were the culmination of Arthur Lloyd's ground-breaking research into the death of William Rufus.
His ideas of the site of Rufus' death were taken up by Frank Barlow by a footnote in his book, William Rufus, which I have yet to study.
