Following Interim Report I, the next stage of the project was dominated by studying the research undertaken by Arthur Lloyd.

I had planned to do this in stage 3. But it started by accident when I was trying to find out more about John Leland and turned up an article, Death of Rufus, published by the Beaulieu History Society:

I then followed up by obtaining the 3 known articles published by Arthur, on a visit to Lymington.

The newspaper article drew my attention back to the book, The Forest, written by Edward Rutherford, which I had read previously. Rutherford backed Arthur's findings and wanted the Rufus Stone taken down! In the fictional book Rutherford includes the William Rufus story:
