Arthur Lloyd
Photo of Arthur in his booklet: The Death of Rufus
Arthur Lloyd was an eminent local historian who conducted painstaking research into William Rufus' death.
Controversially Arthur concluded that the memorial Rufus Stone near Minstead was in the wrong place.
Instead he established that Rufus fell at Truham, now part of the Beaulieu estate.
Where did Rufus die?
He first published his findings in the Hampshire Magazine in 1962.
The article was entitled:
"Where did Rufus die?
by A.T. Lloyd
(who has started one of Hampshire's fiercest controvercies)"
The Death of Rufus
One of the key documents that I had not read before the Interim Report in August was Arthur's booklet: The Death of Rufus
The booklet was written by Arthur in the year 2000, 900 years after William Rufus was killed.
Rumpus over Rufus
Following the publication of his booklet in 2000, he pursuaded Lord Montagu to have a memorial cairn installed at Beaulieu.
On a visit to Lymington in August , I obtained a copy of the newspaper article reporting the unveiling of the Cairn.
Beaulieu History Society
I obtained a copy of the article, The Death of William Rufus published by the Beaulieu History Society in 2007:
in which some of the wording of Arthur's booklet is extracted but not necessarily in the right order!
