Some historians have suggested that the de Clare family were involved in a plot to kill William Rufus. They certainly may have held a grudge. (see Note 1 below)
It was interesting, therefore, that on an escorted tour of Suffolk, we spent a morning in Clare, the seat of the de Clare family. (see Note 2 below)

Willaii Rufus was killed in a hunting accident the New Forest in the year 1100. Sir WalterTirel is the main suspect.
Some historians have suggested that Sir Walter Tirel was related to members of the de Clare family who were also in the hunting party .

William the Conqueror gave lands to his supporters in 1066 and Richaed fitz Gilbert (Richard of Clare) was given land including land at Clare.

The Lady of Clare
Gilbert de Clare, born Clare Castle 1291 (Ancestor Gilbert fitz Richard de Clare) died at Bannockburn in 1314.
With no heir, his lands were divided between his sisters. Elizabeth de Burgh (nee de Clare) lived at Clare Castle until her death in 1360.
She spent huge sums on a luxurious household of up to 100, when Clare's population was less than 1000.
