Workhouse Entry

For some time, I have wondered what happened to John aad Ann Matilda Gardiner and stumbled across an entry on Ancestry.

The wording of this extraordinary entry is as follows:

London Selected Poor Law
Removal & Settlement Records 1698-1930

Shoreditch Settlement Papers May 1854-Aug 1855

Tuesday 12 Dec 1854

Ann Matilda Gardener of No 11 Goldsmiths Grove
before that 3 Goldsmiths Grove

Bethnal Green Workhouse
9 Chapmans Gardens
Seabright St

I am about 41 years of age and the wife of Jno Gardener aged 41 years to whom I was married in the Parish Church of Saint John at Jerusalem at Hackney, Middlesex on the 6th day of  February 1832.

and have 3 children (Chargeable) namely:

- William George aged 10 years
Caroline aged 3 years and
Henry Richard aged 9 months
(Names of chidren bracketed with Note added in the column: "Not by Husband")

Husband left me in October last and I have not seen him since.

About 10 years ago I was admitted into Bethnal Green Workhouse as a legally settled parishioner of that parish and I remained therein near 12 months and upon my discharge I was rated with (a sum of money that appears to read: 7/' & 8sh 6d) for about 5 years.

I have heard that husband was born in a Home in Old Nicol St (at the corner of Thomas Court) in the parish of St Matthews, Bethnal Green
