Piper Family

Introduction - Bower/Collier Family Tree

When I set out to study the Bower/Collier Family Tree, my initial aim was to identify my 8 Great Grandparents (Bower) and my wife Chris’ 8 Great Grandparents (Collier).

Though I have tended to study the Family History of the 16 Great Grandparents, I have also sought to find out the additional 16 Great Great Grandparents’ family names, and any 3 x Great Grandparents along the way!

The names that I have identified to date are:

Summary of Research To Date

Heinrich/Henry Brecht had a number of children after his first wife died:

- Eleanor Brecht, Fashion Street born circa May 1823 buried 24.10.1825, Christ Church, Spitalfields - age 17 months
- Catherine Brecht born Nov 1822 per adult bp 1865 St Matthews, Bethnal Green
- Caroline Brecht born c 1825/6
- Rosnea Brecht born c 1826/7
- Elizabeth Brecht born c 1828/9
- Eleanor Brecht born c 1830/1
- Henry Brecht bp 1833 St Matthews, Bethnal Green died 1855 (age 22)- parents Heinrich Brecht & Harriet Piper
- Christiana Brecht born 1835 per adult bp 1865 St Matthews, Bethnal Green
- George Frederick Brecht, my Great Grandfather, born 1834/5 died 1909 (age 74)

At the moment, we have discovered the baptism of the above children only. 4 of the girls used Piper as their middle name when they got married. In 1837 Henry Brecht married Harriet Piper at St George in the East and she remarried Henry Colvin at the same church in 1838. In the 1841 Census all the surviving children were living with Harriet and her second husband Henry Colvin.

This is a puzzling sequence of events but for the moment I am assuming that Harriet Piper is the mother of all the children born after 1819.

Progress 2007

Visit to London

I visited the Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives in Bancroft Road, near Stepney Green underground station. At the Archives I found out the following:

Maria Catharine & Charlotte Brecht

I had traced Maria's burial at Christ Church, Spitalfields in the IGI and wanted to look at the Parish Records. To my surprise I found another burial for a Charlotte Brecht, also of Fashion Street, who died in 1819 age 9. Neither Charlotte's baptism nor her burial had previously come to light.

Catherine & Christiana Brecht

Again in the IGI, there appeared to be two adult christening at St Matthew's, Bethnal Green in 1865. The adult christenings were confirmed in the Parish Records and birth years were given: Catherine (born 1822) & Christiana ( born 1835).

This was one of the best sessions I have ever had.

After a walk down to Whitechapel I went on to the London Metropolitan Archives where I had one of the biggest finds to date. Heinrich (Henry) Brecht was associated with 3 churches:

Christ Church, Spitalfields
St Matthews, Bethnal Green
St George in the East, Stepney

It was in the Parish Records of Christ Church, Spitalfields where I surprisingly found the burial of Henry Frederick Ludewig Brecht of St Matthew's, Bethnal Green on 3 June 1838 (Age 54). Wonderful!

Progress 2008

Found Henry Brecht's death registered under Breacht!

In preparing an item to be cirulated around my cousins in December, I made another search for the death certificate of Henry Frederick Ludewig Brecht and found it listed under Breacht in the June 1838 Quarter ( died 28 May 1838 age 54 at 8 Bonner Street, Bethnal Green). Amazing to find it after all these years!

Progress 2009

Brecht/Walland Family

The organisation FONS sent me the text of an article in the Times on 16 July 1856 in which dwelling houses with shops at 65 and 67 High-street, Shadwell were to be sold at auction. The properties had been let to a Mrs Brecht, and Henry Brecht had run coffee rooms there (perhaps son Henry Brecht shortly before his untimely death in 1855 (age 22).

The Walland family had lived in Shadwell for many years, where they ran a dairy. Grorge Frederick Brecht became a milkman and married Mary Ann Walland in 1856. So a number of events within two years.

Progress 2011

Death of Mary Somes Wife of Heinrich/Henry Brecht

Browsing the internet for other names, I chanced upon a fascinating entry for Christ Church, Spitalfields:

The burial of Mary (Somes) Brecht (age 35) 3.1.1819 - per the New Family Search web-site.

This partially solved a mystery that we had been trying to solve for 20-25 years!

There must have been appalling and desperate conditions at Fashion Street, Spitalfields where Henry had a colour maker's facility. He lost his wife and 3 young children perhaps to infection which may have been rife in this crowded area of London:

- Maria Brecht buried 16.11.1814 (age 2)
- Charlotte Brecht buried 15.1.1819 (age 9)
- Elisabeth Catharine Brecht buried 17.6.1821 (age 5)

Even after Mary's death, Henry lost another daughter at a young age:

- Eleanor Brecht buried 24.10.1824 (age 17 months)

Search for Harriet Piper

Now we needed to prove if Harriet Piper was the mother of Henry's children born after 1819.

As soon as I realised that I had been "barking up the wrong tree", I started to look for evidence that Harriet Piper was my direct ancestor and found the following additional information:

St Mary's, Newington

24.11.1802 Harriet Piper bp (born 6.1.1802)
- parents John & Mary Piper

St Mary's, Lambeth

(?) 8.9.1782 John Piper married Mary Hunt

1861 Census (also see Notes)

17 Wapping Wall, Shadwell (next to George & Vulture)

Henry Brecht Head 48 Coffee House Keeper born Bethnal Green, Middx
Harriet Brecht Wife 53 born Newington, Surrey
Harriet Brecht Daughter 19 born Bethnal Green, Middx
Rosina Page Boarder 19 Dress Maker born Wapping, Middx
William Colvin Son 15 Bricklayers Labourer born Whitechapel

Notes

Despite marrying in 1838 Henry & Harriet had chosen to use Harriet's former married name Brecht. I found this entry from tracing William Colvin under Calvin! The name Brecht was very difficult to read as Brecht.

1871 Census

24 Patterson St (Stepney) Mile End Old Town

William Colvin Head 26 Painter born Poplar, Middx
Emily Colvin Wife 26 born Poplar, Middx

Emily Colvin was the witness on Harriet (Brecht) Colvin's death certificate.

Things we wish we knew

- Confirmation of Marriage of John Piper, Harness maker (Harriet's father per her marriage cert – to Henry Colvin)
- Birth/Baptism of Heinrich/Henry's children born after 1819
- Confirmation that Harriet Piper was the mother of these children
- Birth/Baptism of Harriet's daughter Harriet Colvin and sons Henry and William Colvin

Harriet Brecht Daughter (19) born Bethnal Green, Middx
Rosina Page Boarder (19) Dress Maker born Wapping, Middx
William Colvin Son (15) Bricklayers Labourer born Whitechapel, Middx

Notes:

Henry & Harriet had adopted Brecht (a name well-known in those parts) rather than use their married name Colvin. They were living near Harriet's son George Brecht.

William Colvin was indexed in Find My Past as Calvin.

The appearance of another Mrs Brecht in 1861 may tie in with a Mrs Brecht quoted in 1856. I was sent an extract dated 16.7.1856 from the Times by the researchers FONS:

"The sale was of two substantially and newly built dwelling houses with shops, Nos 65 and 67 High-street, Shadwell."

The properties were let on lease to Mrs Brecht. It appears that this may have been Harriet (Brecht) Colvin.

In Kelly's 1856 Trade Directory Henry Brecht is listed as having Coffee Rooms in High Street, Shadwell
- I had thought that this was Harriet's son Henry Brecht but instead this may be Henry Colvin who as shown above adopted the name Brecht.
