Sinking of the S S Britannia 1941

Melvyn Misquita

Melvyn Misquita was a journalist in Goa whose Great Uncle, Constaninho Mathias Ludovic Misquita died in Lifeboat Number Seven.

Melvyn conducted extensive research and identified other Goan sailors who did not survive

He made contact with one of the heroes who sailed the lifeboat to Brazil:

Ian McIntosh

He has summarised his research in an excellent web site which enabled me to identify some of the survivors picked up by the Cabo de Hornos:

Brian Pearce and Jack Arkinstall and 2 Nursing Staff
- 4 people who survived on a raft

Marciano D'Sa

With its a history of Portuguese government, some of the Goans had typically Portuguese sounding surnames including:

D'Sa
Fernandes and
Pereira

and some of the survivors who signed my father's menu on the Cabo de Hornos had such surnames.

Goan Survivors

I came across two articles written about Melvyn Misquita by another journalist Frederick Noronha:

the Goan story
