Silk Weavers named Collier - Progress 2008

Charles Collier, Silk Weaver

A descendant of Charles Collier's daughter Emma Collier found our web site and inpired me to look for some more information about Charles Collier, Chris' great great grandfather. By getting all the pieces of information out and spreading them out on the table I spotted that Charles Collier was a witness at his daughter Maria's wedding in 1856.

I had another look in the 1851 census and found that Charles had remarried and some of his children were living with him and some with their mother. No wonder I had not found him before! I then went on to find Charles in the 1861 census as well:

Census Entries - Collier Family

Charles second wife Maria and his daughter (by his first wife)Sarah were also weavers.

In September I was very pleased to receive enquiries from 2 descendants of Charles Collier, one of whom was a descendant of his son Charles as my wife Chris is.

Thomas Collier, Weaver

A descendant of Ellen Collier sought details of the latter's mother and grandparents, which unfortunately I could not provide.

Ellen Collier (father Thomas Collier, Weaver) married Christopher Wheeler, Silk Draper (father Christopher Wheeler, Weaver) at St Philip's Church, Bethnal Green on 10 October 1847.

James & Elizabeth Collier, Silk Weavers

James & Elizabeth Collier are listed in the 1851 Census as silk weavers of Virginia Row, Bethnal Green (Family 6):

Silk Weavers named Collier - Families

A descendant advised me that in 1842 James & Elizabeth's son Abraham Collier married Mary Ann Howsham, a weaveress.

Family 6 has been amended accordingly.

James and Elizabeth (Mason) Collier

Charles Collier was born in Bethnal Green c 1803/4 per 1851 and 1861 Censuses. A Charles Collier was christened on 4/9/1803 at St Matthews, Bethnal Green (parents James & Elizabeth Collier per IGI)

Some researchers have made the leap that Charles Collier was the son of James Collier and Elizabeth Mason who married at St Matthew, Bethnal Green 22/12/1785 per IGI.
