1921 Census

Comparisons with the 1911 Census and 1939 Register

I chose to buy some transcript copies from the 1921 Census, on Find My Past.

The 1921 Census fills in a big gap between 1911 and 1939. There was also a little more information in the new Census including the name and address of employers.

Bower Family

The family were still living in Limehouse in 1921 but in Locksley Street which my Dad talked about.

My Uncle Jack and Aunt Lill were born in 1913 and 1915 respectively.

My Aunts Ellen and Dorothy had gone out to work since 1911.

Brecht/Brett Family

Since 1911, the family had adopted the name Brett and were still living at 78 Clemence Street in Limehouse.

My Mum Doris was born in 1912.

My Uncle Arthur and Aunt Enid had gone out to work since 1911.

Collier Family

The family were still living at King Edwards Road, Ponders End.

Albert had left home.

Aunt Nell had gone out to work since 1911.

Hunt Family

The family had moved from Bulls Cross to Glenville Avenue, Enfield.

We learnt that the head of the family Arthur was working as a gardener for Mr R. G. Porter of Hull Lodge, Clay Hill, Enfield, a short walk from Glenville Avenue.

Aunt Win (Florence) had left home.

Chris' Mum, Phyllis, was born in 1912.

Comparison with 1939 Register

Bower Family

The family had moved to Dixon Street, Limehouse which was later destroyed in the Blitz.

Dad, Aunt Ellen and Uncle Tom had moved out by 1939.

Head of Family William Bower had retired but Uncle Jack and Aunt Lill had found work.

Brecht Family

By 1939, my grandma, Ellen Brett had split up from her husband Arthur.

She still lived at 78 Clemence Sgtreet with my Aunt Nellie and had taken in lodgers.

The rest of the family Mum, Aunt Enid and Uncles Arthur and Stanley had moved out; Arthur to South Africa where he married in 1924.

My grandfather Arthur was living with Percival and Winifred Wight in Locksley Street in Limehouse.

Collier Family

Walter James & Mary were continuing to live at King Edwards Road, Ponders End (No 19).

All the children had moved out.

Hunt Family

Arthur and Eliza contiued to live in Glenville Avenue (No 80).

All the children except Arthur Edwin had moved out.

Arthur had retired and Arthur Edwin was listed as incapacitated.

Leonard Collier/Phyllis Hunt

Leonard& Phyllis had married by 1939.

The family home was 401 Carterhatch Lane (Forty Hill), Enfield.

In 1939, Chris' Mum, Phyllis, was at home but Chris' Dad Len was at the Sectional Fire Station at Lavender Road School.
