Analysis

I was able to find a free index on Find My Past which listed 35 people named Brecht. I was also able to find entries for my grandparents Arthur and Ellen Brett and Arthur's brother William Thomas Brett.

The free details in the index are limited, e.g. it does not show relationships or occupations but are adequate unless paid entries are necessary.

I did pay for fuller entries for 5 families named Brecht and the 2 families named Brett.

Places where they lived

The 35 Brechts were living in:

West Ham including Plaistow 22
Plumstead 6
East Ham 2
Chelsea 1
Lewes 1
Paddington 1

8 were born since the 1911 Census (5 in West Ham, 2 in Plumstead and 1 in Plaistow)

The 2 Brett Families were living in Limehouse and Poplar respectively.

I could not trace quite a lot of people, listed in the 1911 Census, in 1921:

- Henrietta Brecht Widow died 1913 (many name variants)
- Son George Henry Brecht emigrated to Australia
- Wife Lucy Ann Brecht remarried 1916 (Rutter) after husband George Henry Brecht emigrated to Australia
- Son Oliver married in 1916 (not traced since)
- Daughter Rosetta Brecht married 1919 (Oxley)
- No trace of sons Albert, Alf and Frank
Edward Brecht remarried 1911 (not traced since). Of his childen:
- in 1911 Brothers George & Frederick Brecht living with the Warners
- in 1911 Inmates Sidney, John & Ethel Brecht
- (their mother Clara had died 1906) Henry & Helen Brecht & Family
- no trace of children Henry John, Miriam & Leslie
Ivy, a nursemaid who may have married
Albert C. Brecht, paralysed from birth (Albert Edward's son) died 1919 age 16

Albert Brecht (6 in 1911) who was adopted by the Malletts
William John Brecht (age 13 in 1911) who was living with the Greens
Gustav Brecht& Family who may have returned to Germany
Dora Brecht, a Governess who may also have returned to Germany
