The Marriage Certificate shows that the Father of the Charles Collier was in fact, another Charles Collier.

It might well be that after the marriage, the couple resided in Bethnal Green, East London but the Census of 1861 shows them living in Canterbury Terrace, New Brompton, Gillingham, Kent. By then, they had three children, Charles age 6 years, Elizabeth age 2 years and William age 9 months. That son Charles died later on and another Son, Charles Robert was born in 1873 to continue the name. Certain members of the family recall that a Charles Collier, believed to be the one born 1853, became the Sheriff of Bow, East London.

Recollections also exist that at least two of the Sons of Charles and Matilda had Musical Talents and played musical instruments at Variety Theatres in East and North London.

My own Father played the Cornet and had musical talents.

It is known too, that Charles Cocker in Canada had considerable musical talent.

The following pages attempt to show the large number of descendants from this marriage.

Further text appears at the end of this long list of names.

Generation Numbers (with Charles & Matilda Collier being Generation 1) have been added to Ted's original script so that relationships in families may be distinguished. Charles & Matilda Collier's daughter Alice married Edgar Charles Cocker not Edward Charles Cocker.

THE COLLIER “FAMILY TREE”

The idea of a “Family Tree”, first started back in 1976 when Mabel and Dolly Cocker wrote from Vancouver saying that Nieces and Nephews were asking for information to create their own Family records and asked whether I would help them from the U.K. end whilst they did the Canadian end. Since then, I have been quietly plodding on and these pages are the result.

I have had considerable help from so many people to whom, I have written and I express my thanks not only for their help but for the pleasure in re-establishing contacts. It is a great pity that our Parents and Grandparents did not commit namea and dates to paper but perhaps we as children were to blame for not asking them to do so.

We cannot trace the Parents of Charles Collier b 1834 or Matilda Gardiner b 1835.

The memory of two people mention Carrie Hughes. It seems she was the sister of Matilda Gardiner.

When Dolly and Mabel were over in 1981, I took them to Loughton, Essex to see “The Gardeners Arms”. Their mother, my Aunt Alice, had given them a photograph of her, standing outside that Public House.

From there, at the suggestion of the present Landlord of the Pub, we visited a house a few yards along the same Road and met a Mrs Sullivan. This lady is the Daughter of Henry George Hughes who married one of the Gardeners who is now a Lady of nearly 100 years in age but we managed a short chat with her.

We learned that Caroline Gardiner had married John Hughes and for a time, lived at 12, Queen Carolines Gardens, Bethnal Green. In time they had three children, Jack, Henry George and Alice Caroline.

Memories also suggested that one of the Hughes females, was in fact the first Lady to hold a full British Pilot's Licence but we cannot trace so far.

I hope the present generation will find this record of interest and perhaps add to it as their lives progress. My apologies for any mistakes I may have made.
