Discussion Group

Debate 1 - Future of the Discussion Group

One of the concerns is still the size of Room 1 and the limitations it brings. Pity because otherwise Room 1 is ideal.

We currently have 21 people on the register and on average at least 15 people are turning up regularly, for which thank you! We think that 15 is nearing the maximum for the room, if we use tables. We have been bringing in 2 card tables to give everyone a table, or part of one. Also 15 is proving a good number for our discussions.

You have been very good at letting me know if you can’t attend, which helps my planning.

It does mean though that we have had to turn people away and run a waiting list, though there is no one on the list at present.

Potential Second Group

One option we have not looked at with you is setting up a second group. The relatively new Book Club meets as 2 groups under the same group leader.

To me, the second group would have to have a different name like Debates, Current Affairs or Any Questions? Whilst I would help the new group to set up, it would have to be run by a different team.

Diamond Jubilee Celebrations 12-19 September

Hopefully the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations will go ahead. If so on the afternoon of Tuesday 15 September, there will be an additional session entitled Any Questions?

The aim is to give up to 10 people a taster. It would be a Meet the Discussion Group session and there would be some form of draw to select at least 5 people from the current Discussion Group to participate.

The extra meeting would look at topical questions submitted the week before. The Chairman would list the questions for the participants.

Question

Please could you let me know:

1. Whether you would be interested in joining a separate group with an Any Questions format. (you could belong to both groups if you wished)
2. Whether you would be interested in attending the first meeting planned for September

Comments& Views To Date

1. Would be an easy session to prepare (Colin)

2. Could lose members to the second group, e.g. if called Current Affairs

3.Separate Debating Club might work but would not join it

4. Would join a second group but not a debating style

5. CURRENT Group meeting fortnightly would be ideal

6. With second group could explore ways to attract a younger more diverse cross-section
- making wider range of views

7. Could be potential for a What the Papers Say session (Group members to bring in cuttings)

8. Like the idea of Discussion Group meetings twice a month

Conclusions

Many thanks for the feedback.

I think that there is enough support to try a second group.

When we get back together, I think that we shoukld look at:

Is Room 1 free say fortnightly?

What should the second group be called, What the Papers Say or Any Questions?

Should the second group concentrate on topical questions to avoid duplication?

Should the 2 groups have a max attendance of 15?

Should both groups offer tasters and have a waiting list?

Who is going to run the second group!?
